Highlighting Sydney's Father Chris Riley's: Youth
Off the Street
What
more can you say, when told that Father Chris Riley's efforts have helped 50,000
to 60,000 street kids over the last
15 years. It is a sad reflection on us
all when this number of kids are forced by circumstances to leave their homes
to live of the street.
"Youth
Off The Streets is a community organisation working for young people who are chronically
homeless, drug dependent
and recovering from abuse. We support these young
people as they work to turn their lives around and overcome immense
personal
traumas such as neglect and physical, psychological and emotional abuse.
We
provide crisis care for young people still living on the streets with our food
van, youth refuge and outreach programs.
We also operate an innovative drug
and alcohol program specifically designed for young people. Our accredited independent
high schools in Surry Hills, the Southern Highlands and Merrylands, provide
flexible educational opportunities and support for
young people living on
the streets or who are unable to attend mainstream high schools. Many of these
young people go on
to successfully achieve their School Certificate and,
in increasing numbers, their Higher School Certificate.
Our
medium to long term residential rehabilitation programs, located in the Southern
Highlands and the Hunter Valley, provide
support for young people who have
made the commitment to living a drug and crime free lifestyle. While they are
in our care the
young people attend school as well as receive counselling,
life skills and vocational training."

Trade
Unions: Why they evolved and why they are still important for many workers.
Between
the late 18th and mid 19th centuries, Britain was transformed from a mainly agrarian
and rural society into one
whose wealth was based on industrial production
and whose population was increasingly located in fast expanding towns.
Workers
the world over at this time mostly looked upon trade unionism as not just a means
for protecting and improving their
living standards, but also as a vehicle
for democratically changing the entire political and economic order of society,
for the betterment of the larger portion of the population.
For example, under the new Industrial Relations
Legislation, Trade Union provided training
in occupational health and safety
issues, that was previously allowed is now outlawed.
Throughout
history workers rights, wages and working conditions were always controlled by
the ruling classes, whether they
be the aristocracy, governments or employers.
Unions were always going to be a threat to the status quo.
It
seems nothing much has changed.
Any government with inflexible ideologies, who perceives their predominant
reason for existence is just to remain
in power, rather than improving the
common good does not deserve our support.
For
many of us in "Cruise
Ship Australia" it is too easy to ignore the difference between
"aspirational" and "inspirational".
You
owe it to all of our children not to forget the hard fought lessons of history.

Diskeeper
Lite Freeware
Diskeeper Lite is a disk defragmenter product.
The full Diskeeper product is widely regarded to be one of
the best solutions
for automated and reliable disk defragmentation - the Lite version uses the same
advanced technology. The main differences are that it has to be started manually
and can only work on the
hard disk it is installed on. If all you need is
a top quality tool for manual defragmentation, then this free
version is
a great choice. Personally I think it leaves the Norton Systemworks one for dead.Use
every few days.[P]

Tune
Up Utilities
Anyone using Microsoft Windows on a computer needs
utility software to manage adverse changes to the
operating system and software
files during day to day usage. These changes can dramatically affect the
way software programs operate on the computer. Many of these utility programs
claim to do all sorts of
things but few deliver safely. This Award Winning
German software appears to be one exception.
TuneUp Utilities® 2005 optimizes
the performance of your computer, corrects problems and helps you to
customize
your system to suit your needs. Not unlike Nortons Systemworks, it does a similar
job and
includes a "One Click" maintenance check.
Note:
Personally I have used this program for over a year now and have found it far
superior to Systemworks.
I do a "1-Click Maintenance" each night
before I go to bed. Absolutely essential.
I am not aware of any other program
that does a similar job so well. Same with "Diskeeper Lite" [P]
RegistryFix
- will scan your system registry and hard drive for invalid file and system references.
These
invalid references cause system instability, PC errors, constant crashes, and
general system slowdowns.
Complements TuneUp Utilities by scanning using different
parameters.[P]
Many other similar programs can be quite dangerous to use and
cause more problems than they solve.

MISCELANEOUS SOFTWARE
/ FREEWARE
Please
note. Always seek professional
advice before downloading software to check whether these
programs are both
safe and compatible with your hardware, operating system and other installed software.
Note that many downloads, no matter who they are from may contain Spyware,
eg Kazaa has over 70.
Totally Free software downloads [Freeware] usually can
only be legally downloaded for personal or
educational use. Always check
to see if there is a trial period, after which you have may have to pay.
Sometimes this fact can be difficult to find on the sourcing web site.
Beware
of the many lesser known Windows and Registry utilities as they may do the opposite
of what they
claim. Also some of the claims they may make about being recommended
by various other specialty
websites could also be a bit dodgy and impossible
to verify.
All care is taken when
choosing the programs below. Most of the software programs listed below are pretty
well
known and
respected to do the job for which they are
intended. Most also have been around for quite a while.
But just the same,
use them at your own risk. Remember computers and software can be very unpredictable
beasts, so compatibility and download problems are common.
I am personally using or have used successfully
software marked [P].

ACT is an extremely practical,
functional and well thought out CRM program

It is great value for about $300AUD. Customer Service number is 1800-675-617 (Free

Can't afford Photoshop?
Then try GIMP. This is a freely distributed program [since 1996] can be used for
such tasks as photo
retouching, image composition and image authoring. The
latest has separate versions for Unix, Mac OS X and Windows
[NT 4, 2000 or
XP recommended with at least 512MB but preferably 1GB RAM ]. "The GIMP for
Windows is a two-stage
installation: first you should install the GTK+ Runtime
Environment followed by the main GIMP Installer itself. Upon starting the
first time, the GIMP will take a few moments to configure and scan your system
for fonts. Once completed you are ready to go."
Download page. [Download info courtesy of PC Authority magazine,
Dec., 2004].
Ghostscript
and Viewer download [make sure you download the correct version for your Operating
system] allows GIMP to read
a PostScript or PDF file and display the results
on the screen or convert them into a form you can print on a non-PostScript
printer. Especially together with several popular previewers, with Ghostscript
you can view or print an entire document or even
isolated pages, even if
your computer doesn't have Display PostScript and your printer doesn't handle
PostScript itself.
Note: Personally I could not get Ghostscript to
function with GIMP on XP. I may have done something wrong????
GMail
Drive [from Viksoe.dk] - This highly inovative program is a Shell
Namespace Extension that creates a virtual file
system around your Google
Gmail account, allowing you to use Gmail as a storage medium.
GMail Drive
creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google Gmail account and enables you
to save and retrieve files stored
on your Gmail account directly from inside
Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under
the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag'n'drop
files to.
Warning: Changes to GMail may make deactivate this program.
Definitely though a sign of things to come.

our brains would work if we had photographic memories. It's a desktop search application
that
provides full text search over your email, computer files, chats, and
the web pages you've viewed. By making your computer
searchable, Google Desktop
Search puts your information easily within your reach and frees you from having
to manually
organize your files, emails, and bookmarks." See SearchEngineWatch.com
for a comprehensive review.
It's very scary how good and how quick GDS is
in searching for words on your hard disk, and it does search the entire disk.

GuruNet
Toolbar Freeware
"With GuruNet, searching doesn't require
clicking on your browser... You can call up a reference simply by alt-clicking
on any
word on your screen or by entering a search term in a toolbar that
hides at the edge of your desktop... A window pops open with
basic information
on the topic and choices for additional data. Unlike a search engine, GuruNet's
'answer engine' provides
information about more than 700,000 topics, rather
than just links". A very useful tool to complement Google. Ignore prompts
to
make a payment unless you want the paid version. Just close down the page
and start using Gurunet.

COMPUTERS
- PROTECTIVE SOFTWARE / FREEWARE -
[This section last updated April 26th 2006].
Note
on anti-spyware software: The newer versions of Spyblaster, SpywareGuard,
Spybot Search and Destroy and
do similar jobs, but in different ways, actually
complement each other and so should be used together. Personaly I currently
use all of the above as well as PC Tools' Spyware Doctor [see below]and find them
compatable with each other.
Many other anti-spyware programs are themselves
malicious in that they may put spyware on your computer, drown you with
ads,
are sometimes impossible to uninstall and may make misleading claims as to their
capabilities.
Spyware and Malware is now so sofisticated that the freebees
alone are no longer good enough to guarantee protection from
these nasties.
Now you really need to purchase an extra program to provide better protection.
Better but NOT perfect. Protection will probably NEVER be perfect.
See
Rogue/Suspect
Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites and StopBadware.org
for a lot more info on this subject.
and Spam
- Combating and Filtering SPAM with Freeware.
and the USA
Federal Trade Commission info site on Spam and Spyware.
Note:
Personally I refuse to use any software product with a "Norton's"
label on it.
Do not use more than one Firewall or Antivirus program at a time.
Antivirus
programs. The 3 free versions below appear to be the best of the Freebees.
If you read the reviews it is difficult to pick
accurately which is the best.
Most of the adverse reviews on AVG were of the previous version, so cannot be
taken into account.
Most users appear to be content with the latest versions
of these three programs. They do the job, so why pay for anything else.
AntiVir®
Personal Edition Freeware
This German program offers effective
protection against computer viruses for the individual and private
use on
a single PC-workstation. Claims superiority over Nortons Anti-Virus in real world

Avast
Antivirus Home Edition Freeware
This
German program offers effective protection against computer viruses for the individual
and private

Anti-Virus in real world tests.
AVG
Anti Virus Free Edition - [Grisoft.com]
This is a Czeck program,
very comprehensive collection of features, auto update.
The most recommended
free anti-virus software on the web and my personal choice.[P]
Death2Spam
Used
against email spam and viruses. The
Death2Spam Mail Server is a third-generation Bayesian Internet email filtering
service.
His servers provide a first line of defence for email, by filtering
out the spam and viruses before they reach your computer.
This means that
software like Nortons, Zone Alarm, AntiVir etc become your second line of defence
for emails, so providing
even greater security and peace of mind.
Richard,
a New Zealander, went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to speak at
its annual 2004 Spam Conference
about Bayesian gateway servers, for which
he is a world authority.
Bayesian mathematics is a branch of statistics
dealing with probability. Bayesian filters look at the words or combinations of
words in emails and calculate the likelihood the entire message is spam.
What really interests mathematicians is the way
Bayesian filters can be self-learning
- the more spam or viruses they handle, the better they get.
Very highly
recommended, particularly as a first line of defence against email viruses
and Trojans.
This is even more important than cutting back spam. Costs about
$45 AUD a year at last look, and well worth it. [P]
IE-SPYAD
Freeware
IE-SPYAD adds a long list of sites and domains associated
with known advertisers, marketers, and crapware pushers to the
Restricted
sites zone of Internet Explorer. Once you merge this list of sites and domains
into the Registry, the web sites for
these companies will not be able to
use cookies, ActiveX controls, Java applets, or scripting to compromise your privacy
or
your PC while you surf the Net. Nor will they be able to use your browser
to push unwanted pop-ups, cookies, or auto-installing
programs on your PC.
I think this one is included when you install Spybot Search and Destroy.
Please
note that IE-SPYAD is not an ad blocker. It will not block standard banner ads
in Internet Explorer.
Shields
Up - This service, provided by Steve Gibson of the Gibson Research
Corp. examines a PC's network connection with
your permission, to determine
whether or not it has "open ports" that can be exploited by hackers.
Since the testing mechanism
needs to be outside your network in order to
conduct such vulnerability assessments, Shields Up! provides a valuable service
that
cannot easily be performed by software you install. Use this site to
find out what your unique computer ID is.
Spybot
Search & Destroy Freeware
Search your hard disk for so-called
spybots or adbots, the modules that are responsible for showing ads and transmitting
information back to vendors. If Spybot Search and Destroy finds such modules,
it will remove them or replace them with
empty dummies. Also acts like a
Firewall for your System files, giving you a warning if a program is trying to
change them.[P]
SpywareBlaster
Freeware
Prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware,
adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Blocks spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer. Compatible
with Ad-Aware, use both.
SpywareBlaster can help keep your system spyware-free
and secure, without interfering with the "good side"
of the web.
Unlike other programs, SpywareBlaster does not have to remain running in the background.[P]
SpywareGuard
Freeware
SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution
against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection
method.
Anti-virus
programs scan files before you open them and prevents execution if a virus is
detected - SpywareGuard
does a similar thing, but for spyware! You can easily
have an anti-virus program running alongside SpywareGuard. [P]
Spyware
Doctor [PC Tools] - is a top-rated
malware & spyware removal utility that detects, removes and protects your
PC
from thousands of potential spyware, adware, trojans, keyloggers, spybots
and tracking threats. Auto update included.
Currently about best of the bunch.[P]
Sunbelt-Kerio Personal Firewall Freeware - I no longer recommend
the free version as it has taken off web surfing
protection.
WinPatrol
Freeware - Monitors vulnerable areas of your computer and will
alert you to any changes.[P]
ZoneAlarm
Firewall Feeware
The latest version of this firewall does
everything for you and is very well regarded by the experts. [P]

claim the pundits of medical orthodoxy, have been
associated with good health
and longevity throughout the globe and since the dawn of time. The research of
Weston Price
proves otherwise. From the Eskimo of Alaska to the hardy Alpiner,
from Gaelic villager to African tribesman, Price
discovered that all healthy
indigenous people had a plentiful source of animal fat in the diet.

various names by which a specific foodstuff
may be known around the world,

are all exactly
the same variety. The Cook's Thesaurus could not be simpler

FreeRecipe.org
I guess if you look hard enough you will find a site
on the web that specializes in just about anything.
The anonymous authors
of this site have collected as many recipes as they could find from the late 1800’s
and early 1900’s.
Many come from out-of print books. Others are family favorites
passed down through the years. All of them were created before
the advent
of electric ovens and microwaves! These
are recipes apparently you can’t find anywhere else—the books are out of
publication or they aren’t hot-selling recipes because most of them have not been
adapted for today’s kitchens.
Crank up the old wood-fired stove. Definitely
worth a look.

Kefir
Probably originating
thousands of years ago in the Caucasus Mountains of Europe. Kefir was made by
the local cattle and goat
herders. Kefir culture is unique among fermented
milk starters in that it is composed from a mixture of friendly bacteria and yeasts
that harmoniously coexist. The microbes break down the lactose in milk and
the other chemical components, contributing to the
taste and transformation
of milk to Kefir. Kefir.net
shows why it is different to yoghourt.
There is no genuine fresh Kefir that

Paleolithic
Diet - What the Hunter/Gatherers Ate - A 3-Part Introduction by Ward Nicholson.
Essentially
this concerns the study of what humans ate during the the last 2 million years
prior to the last Ice Age about 12,000
years ago. A major factor inhibiting
the study of this subject is that after the last Ice Age, the level of the worlds
oceans rose,
flooding the coastal regions of most continents where probably
the highest concentrations of lived, thus eliminating completely
the richest
area of study for modern archeologists. Many nutritionists feel we have much to
learn about human health by studying
the diets of these people.
See
NutritionAustralia
and the Loren
Cordain, PhD interview for other overviews. Indiana
University article on how changes
in hunting techniques over
the last 200,000 years influenced diet. See
also PaleoDiet.com

If
after reading this you still think humans shoud be vegetarians, have a look at
this functional
and structural comparison
of a human's digestive tract with
that of a dog's and a sheep's.

a voice of moderation into the
world of Middle east news reprting. "When
Al-Rashed arrived at Al Arabiya, he replaced the news director and hired a new
executive editor. The three men share a vision for the station that involves
less gore and a wider definition of what is news and
what should captivate
the interest and emotions of their viewers. The new leadership triumvirate is
interested in reporting stories
about honor killings and violence against
women in Arab countries, a widespread phenomenon rarely considered newsworthy
by
other Arab media outlets. Al-Rashed and his top editors also push for
lighter stories about daily life -- the kind of apolitical features

"The
Responsibility to Protect: Humanitarian Intervention in the 21st Century".
2002 Wesson Lecture in International Relations Theory and Practice, by Gareth
Evans, Stanford University.
This has been put forward as a policy blueprint
for the United Nations.
...if humanitarian intervention is, indeed, an unacceptable
assault on sovereignty, how should we respond to a Rwanda,
to a Srebrenica—to
gross and systematic violations of human rights that affect every precept of our
common humanity?
Faulkner,
John, Australian Government Senator. From the 2005 Henry Parkes Lecture, 22nd
October, 2005.
"Politics is one of the ways our large and diverse nation
works out solutions to our problems -- including our social problems.
Politics
without a social purpose is the empty pursuit of power, brutal and meaningless."
Greer, Germaine, On receiving an Honary Doctorate of Letters at Sydney
University in November, 2005.
"....Now you may be thinking to yourself,
'What am I going to do with all that history I studied? Will it make me a better
operator in the call centre?' The answer is no. It will probably make you
a worse operator in a call centre. And it might get
you sacked … which is
a pretty good outcome," she said.
"But
what it will do is make it easier for you to bear working in the call centre.
Think of it that way. Because you will have
another option now.
"It
may be an option that will never earn you a penny - or on the other hand, it may
make you rich and famous - but all the
things that you have learnt … nobody
can take them away.
"They
are your treasure. And when things are really grim, they are always still there."

1513. - Brief
biography, Dedicated
Machiavelli website.
"The
first great political philosopher of the Renaissance was Nicolo Machiavelli (1469-1527).
His famous treatise, The Prince,
stands apart from all other political writings
of the period insofar as it focus on the practical problems a monarch faces in
staying
in power, rather than more speculative issues explaining the foundation
of political authority. Machiavelli's greatest work is
The Prince, written
in 1513 and published after his death in 1532. The work immediately provoked controversy
and was soon
condemned by Pope Clement VIII. Its main theme is that princes
should retain absolute control of their territories,
and they should use
any means of expediency to accomplish this end, including deceit."
[500 years later this philosophy is still being used very effectively by the the
governments of many countries in the world].

Also
many thanks to the time, effort and dedication of the hundreds of individuals,
who put their
heart and soul into the construction of the websites linked
now to Websearcher.com.au.
Without their input the construction of this site
would not have been possible.
Apologies:
I realise this page is slow to download due to its size if you have a Dial-Up
internet connection,
but the speed is OK for those on ADSL or Broadband.
When I get time I will endeavour to break up the page into smaller
bits to
increase speed. Unfortunately until then, if you still want to use this page,
you will just have to make do.

I am always open
to suggestions for new websites to list, or ones to delete. I am also trying to
keep the

It would be great to hear your feedback positive as well as the negative.
